Burnability Hot Sauce
BurnAbility hot sauces are created by people with disabilities, who have a hand in everything from planting the chilis to designing the label art and selling the products. LETC Smile Farms, in a partnership with Smile Farms, Inc., employs people of all abilities on our organic, urban farm in Brooklyn.
The farmers grow eight varieties of hot and sweet peppers that are turning into two delicious hot sauces — Burnability Red and Burnability Green. Each are available for purchase in 5 oz bottles.
BurnAbility Green is tangy and refreshing with a zip of heat and subtle smokey finish. BurnAbility Red is a classic red sauce with a slightly sweet and firey finish.

100% of the purchase price of BurnAbility hot sauces goes directly to LETC Smile Farms to support their mission of providing on-the-job training for people of all abilities. With the help of consultants through Brooklyn Grange, the farmers have learned how to employ organic and sustainable methods, including the use of compost, companion planting, and how to attract pollinators and "good pests". The farmers are responsible for seeding, planting, tending, weeding, watering, fertilizing, harvesting, storing produce, and composting.
Employment and other opportunities for meaningful engagement for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are woefully scarce, with estimates of up to 80% of which do not have a paid job in the community. Person’s with a disability are more than 3x’s less likely to be employed compared to those without a disability. Having a job increases a person’s self-esteem, self-purpose, and quality of life.
BurnAbility are versatile sauces with mellow, just-right heat. Riper chilis provide sweeter, earthier notes in the red version, compared to the tangier taste of the springtime verde. Both highlight the peppers’ natural brightness with a mix of herbs and a hit of umami from onion and garlic. With all the love the farmers pour into growing the ingredients, it’s no wonder these sauces are delicious on absolutely everything! And best of all – there are two to choose from!
BurnAbility is made possible through a partnership between League Education and Treatment Center (LETC) and Smile Farms, Inc. an organic urban farm. At LETC Smile Farms, people with all abilities can find employment and receive training in sustainable growing practices with help from the experts at Brooklyn Grange, who also helped create the recipe for the sauce. Proceeds from BurnAbility go to the farmer’s wages and farm operations.
